Event details

Join Edward Wicks DipWSET for this free bitesize webinar with a festive twist as we take a journey through the evolution of gin, focusing on how changes in tastes, attitudes and technology have shaped the spirit we know and celebrate today.

Starting with the Dutch spirit Genever, the ancestor of gin, we’ll move through overconsumption of gin in the UK during the 1700s and its subsequent transformation which led to the rise of the London Dry style. We'll then look at gin’s resurgence in popularity over the last two decades and consider contributions to its current prominence, especially across markets in the US and Spain.

Come along prepared to pick up some practical tips as we explore some of the key substyles of gin, share serving suggestions (such as how to prepare a batch martini for the freezer!) and get into the festive spirit as Ed guides us through making a seasonal White Lady cocktail. See Ed’s recipe below and give it a go at home!

50ml London Dry Gin

25ml Triple Sec

15ml cranberry juice

15ml lemon juice

(optional) half a teaspoon of caster sugar or 5 ml of simple syrup

1 egg white or 15ml Aquafaba

Edward Wicks DipWSET - Quality Lead Levels 1-3 and Wine, Spirits and Beer Educator

Ed has been working in the drinks business in some form since he turned 18 years old. A long stint as a cocktail bartender laid the foundation for his love of spirits. It was during this time he decided to study the WSET Level 2 Award in Wines and Spirits qualification, which also ignited his passion for wine. Within a few busy years, he had completed both the Level 3 and Diploma. He was awarded the Porter & Laker Scholarship prize at Level 3 and both the Louis Jadot and Yvonne May Wine Australia Scholarship prizes at Diploma. He is an enthusiastic champion of sweet wines and is always trying to make new converts to the style.
