A tasting of four wines made using sustainable, organic or biodynamic principals.

Event details

Viticultural practices have changed over the 20th Century – where it once was common to use chemicals in the vineyard to control various aspects of grape growing, many producers are now moving away from such practices. This has led to several different "alternative" options, such as sustainable viticulture, organic viticulture and biodynamic viticulture.

Likewise, there are options when it comes to winemaking too, with some producers choosing to control all elements of the process, and others going for a minimal intervention or natural approach.

With the WSET Level 3 Award in Wines, students are expected to have an understanding of these practices, but it can be tricky to differentiate between them and understand how this relates to the taste of the wines.

Join WSET School London educator Sam Povey to taste four wines made using different approaches, using the WSET Level 3 Systematic Approach to Tasting Wine®, and you'll discover what each approach means and how they affect the taste of the wines.

Who is this session for?

This session is perfect for both current and prospective Level 3 students. It will give those who are thinking about enroling on the Level 3 qualification an introduction to the WSET Level 3 Systematic Approach to Tasting Wine® and will give current students the opportunity to compare wines made using different viticultural and winemaking practices.

This session has been arranged as a follow up to WSET's Virtual Open House, a free event being run by the WSET awarding body on 19-20 October. If you haven't already, make sure you register for the "An overview of the WSET Level 3 Award in Wines" session at 11am or 7pm BST on Wednesday 19 October! For sessions being run by the team at WSET School London, please check our tastings and events page. We have a selection of events for prospective students taking place throughout Monday 24 October 2022, both online and at our London HQ, including:

Example wine list

About the presenter, Sam Povey

Sam Povey

He then moved into wine and food retail in north London: managing wine lists, hosting tastings and training staff. Today, he teaches the WSET Levels 1-2 Awards in Wines and hosts events at WSET School London.

About the WSET Level 3 Award in Wines

The Level 3 Award in Wines is designed to give students a thorough understanding of the factors that account for the style, quality and price of the principal still, sparkling and fortified wines of the world.
