Celebrate Furmint February by joining us for a tasting with Róbert Kindl, general manager of Oremus, one of Tokaj's most renowned estates.
Event details
Oremus, in the heart of the Tokaj region, has been producing wine since 1630. While prolonged neglect under Soviet rule threatened its legacy, the region returned to the world stage as the USSR began to disintegrate in 1989.
Against this backdrop of uncertainty, the Álvarez family - owners of Spain's Tempos Vega Sicilia - purchased Oremus. In the 31 years since, this partnership has seen Oremus' vineyards expand, as they introduced dry styles to complement the traditional sweet wines for which the region is famous.
During the evening, you'll learn about the history, geography and climate of this historic region. We'll explore the changes that wineries have made over the past 30 years in response to the opportunities created by outside investment and the challenges of declining consumption of sweet wine.
Alongside a flight of dry and sweet wine, guests will enjoy a selection of cheese and snacks from Mons in Borough Market.

About the speaker, Róbert Kindl
Born and raised in Hungary, Róbert Kindl developed a connection with wine through family ties during his younger years. However, his true revelation about the beauty of wines occurred while studying in the UK in 2004. During this period, Róbert worked at one of the newly launched facilities of Davy’s Wine Bars while pursuing a degree in politics at the University of London.
Eager to broaden his horizons, Róbert decided to study and work abroad, leading to a subsequent venture into wine studies in Hungary and New Zealand. This journey included a nine-year period dedicated to winemaking and wine business management in various regions of New Zealand.
Upon returning to Hungary, Róbert entered a new phase in his professional life, focusing on Tokaj. Between 2015 and 2017, he worked on a project in Tokaj. Subsequently, after overseeing the launch of an organic wine estate elsewhere in Hungary, Róbert assumed the role of general manager at Oremus in 2021.
Since joining Oremus, Róbert has embarked on an eventful and exciting journey, consistently presented with opportunities to shape and contribute to the future of both a unique wine and the esteemed company itself.
